Class Music

Sweet Valley recognises the value of music in a child’s life and as such has embraced the subject as an integral part of the school curriculum. This department goes a long way to encouraging and stimulating a love for the broader subject of Arts and Culture. While striving for excellence the staff of four full-time and seven part-time highly qualified and dedicated music teachers provide an opportunity for children to enjoy making music and to achieve the best of which they are capable.

All classes receive music education once a week.

Individual Music Lessons

From Grade 2, children may opt into individual instrument lessons with specialist teachers who are passionate about developing each musician’s technical ability and love for performance. Lessons take place during the school day — one 30-minute session per week — so that pursuing an instrument fits naturally into the school timetable.

Performances

Performance is woven into every term of the Sweet Valley music calendar. Our children take the stage in a wide variety of settings throughout the year – from weekly lunchtime concerts and the termly Grade Concert Series, to outreach performances at old age homes, specialised instrument showcases, ensemble evenings, and formal prize-giving ceremonies.

Ensembles

Ensemble playing is at the heart of the Sweet Valley music programme. Through both homogenous and mixed instrumental groups, children develop technical skill, musical listening, and the ability to collaborate – discovering the unique joy of making music together.
We currently offer:
  • Guitar Ensemble
  • Flute Ensemble

  • String Ensemble
  • Marimba Band
  • Percussion Group
  • Prep Band

Choirs

Our three vocal groups offer children a rich and varied choral experience, spanning traditional choral repertoire, pop classics, and contemporary hits. Sweet Valley’s choral programme develops musicianship, vocal technique, and a genuine love for singing across all age groups.

Cape Town Eisteddfodeau

Both Senior and Junior Choirs participate in the Cape Town and Afrikaans Eisteddfodeau and have come away with excellent results over the years. Children are given the opportunity to perform at the school assemblies which is a way of sharing their talent with their peers and also giving them the opportunity to perform.

Each year a Music Prize Competition takes place which allows those who show performing ability to compete against others and to learn from the experience. This is adjudicated by two external judges.

Our children have participated most successfully in both the Cape Town and Afrikaans Eisteddfodeau, and external examinations. Every child who studies music is required to play in a grade concert irrespective of how long they have been studying music. This is fun and is kept low-key. They also participate in concerts and community outreach programmes.
