Why
SWEET VALLEY
Welcome to Sweet Valley Primary.
Thank you for visiting our website and for taking the time to learn more about our school. Whether you are a current family, a prospective parent, or simply exploring what makes Sweet Valley special, I hope these pages give you a real sense of who we are.
Sweet Valley Primary is far more than a school campus. It is a caring learning community where children are known, valued, and encouraged to flourish. Relationships matter here. So do high expectations, a strong sense of belonging, and meaningful opportunities for every child.
At the heart of our school is our vision of being An Innovative Learning Community. We want our children to grow into curious, capable, grounded, and compassionate young people who are ready to engage well with the world around them. That growth happens not only in the classroom, but also through sport, music, culture, leadership, and service.
Sweet Valley is a warm and welcoming school, but it is also a school with purpose. Our staff are deeply committed to their work and to the children in their care. We aim to offer a rich and balanced education that develops both confidence and character.
As you explore the website, I hope you will gain a feel for the heart of Sweet Valley, as well as the energy of daily life in our community. I also hope you will see why so many families experience this as a place where children are supported, stretched, and inspired.
Thank you again for your interest in our school. I hope this website is a helpful introduction and that, in time, you will come and experience Sweet Valley in person.

OUR HISTORY
Sweet Valley Primary School:
A Brief History
Founded in 1957, Sweet Valley Primary has grown alongside the Bergvliet community while keeping a strong sense of who it is and why it exists. Interestingly, the school was built before much of the surrounding suburb was developed, making it one of the first schools in South Africa to be established ahead of a new residential area.
On 21 January 1957, Sweet Valley opened its doors to just 24 children, led by founding Principal Mr W J van Heerden and two teachers. The school began with seven classrooms and a handcraft room.
The school stands on land once connected to the old Sweet Valley Farm, and its story is closely tied to the early development of Bergvliet and the surrounding area.
From these beginnings, Sweet Valley steadily expanded over the decades, with major additions over several years, growing into the well-resourced campus it is today.
“Sweet Valley began ahead
of its time – a school built
in anticipation of a
growing community.”
“Our history is not only about buildings and dates, but about people, belonging, and a community growing together.”
“From farmland beginnings to a thriving campus, Sweet Valley’s story is one of steady growth and purposeful development.”
As the needs of families changed, the school grew with them. Pre-Primary children were welcomed from 1987, and the After School Care Centre was established in 1988. In 1992, Sweet Valley opened its doors to children of all races and cultures, reflecting a broader new chapter in South Africa and in the life of the school itself. Since then, Sweet Valley has continued to develop as a place of learning, belonging, and opportunity for a diverse and vibrant community.
Today, Sweet Valley Primary is home to over 900 children and remains deeply rooted in its heritage while looking firmly to the future. As an Innovative Learning Community, the school honours its past, celebrates its people, and continues to grow in ways that serve the children and families of today.

Its role is to help ensure that Sweet Valley remains well-led, sustainable, and aligned with its values, always in service of providing the best possible environment for our children to learn and grow.

Clear collection procedures and structured arrangements ensure the safety and well-being of every child.
